Will there ever be a creative renaissance in Hollywood or are we to look at foreign films and indies for original and inspired material?


Is it Hollywood that dictates the movies of the times or is it the taste of the audience?

How much is the creative process stifled by the fact that to get your foot in the door in Hollywood you have to go through so much crap (and, ultimately, through a lot of the same people that decide all the other projects) ?

I definetely agree that Hollywood plays it safe by going with the sure bets and the formulas. Granted that Hollywood is like the democratic process, the same majority that voted for Bush will go watch a sequel to the Fast and the Furious. But as the tenants of a free market society say, there will be a supply as long as there is a demand, you may just have to look a little harder if you are a discerning viewer.

with box office sales dropping this year, i'm sure that they are going to take a hard look at what they produce. There's still a lot of good movies out there to see and as people's taste become more selective than there might be a back-lash to crapvilles' movie projects.

what will be worse is if Fast and the Furious IX is up for a Best Picture Oscar because quality leaves the industry altogether.

Here's a question: What makes someone like mainstream movies versus independent movies? I noticed that an earlier comment is trying to parallel that same group into also voting for Bush. So, is there something about this group's personality that leads them to mainstream choices?

I think it was "Give me liberty or give me death!" but as America has moved "forward" in history it has slowly morphed into "Give me conveniece or give me death!" America's apathy toward everything is definitly why no one has stopped bad movies from being made. I think just like the rest of America, Hollywood has become lazy, they stopped putting effort into scripts and plot lines because they know they don't have to people will watch it anyway. Its just like McDonalds. They feed people processed crap all day and the same people come back every day to stuff their faces. If people can't find a movie (Food) that has tits(Cheese), blood (Burger), and a whole lot of exploisions (Ketchup packets) then it ain't worth watchin' (Eatin').

Well, the comment was supposed to be just a low-blow but now that I think about it the parallel is there to be made. Single-issue voters and Bush supporters are much like the mainstream movie audience, they will take straight up recycled plots over nuanced story-lines any day. Most Americans just don't like to think too much, thinking and diplomatic ways have yielded to sticking to your guns and imposed religious values/obnoxious patriotism. So, instead of going to watch a movie with an unknown cast and an innovative plot, we'll stick to recycling Robert DeNiro's no-nonsense character in a slap-stick sequel.


I will bet money that if you gave a test of intellect and geopolitical awareness to a random group of Bush supporters and a random group of people that are blockbuster movie lovers, there would be an astounding overlap.

You're both on the same track but it doesn't quite provide a solid answer. Yes, I agree that intellect, convenience, and laziness provide a good foundation for gravitating towards these crappy movies--but I'm lazy and I like arty movies.


The question is why do I and why doesn't a good bit of others? Is it your environment that you grow up with or is it some sort of gene that makes you like a good story versus a predictable cliched story? I know a lot of people that if you show them anything that they haven't heard about through Entertainment Tonight will just downright refuse to sit and to watch it. And the movie could be totally great but they just won't do it. If it has Kate Hudson in it, though, they're all excited to see it. I just don't get it.

***Somewhere in Hollywood***....:Hey what if we made a movie with a funny black and a straight laced white guy annnnnnnnd....oh what if there cops annnnnnnnnnnd they don't like each other at firsssssst...but....the...the police chief put them together because he saw the crime stopping potential. Put some exploisions in there ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....maybe a car chase or two/oh oh and the white guy's wife just died so he's a single father and the black guy helps him to get his mojo back and so he gets a new piece of ASS/mommy for the kid. The multiethnic duo solves the smuggling ring thing and roll credits I sign your check you pay for my house in Fiji. *thanx chou**

Money is the Root of All Evil. I guess Hollywood has lots of money so Hollywood=Hell. They are already there and they don't even know it!!!
